Another Good Book
I've just finished reading Italian political thinker Norbert Bobbio's Left and Right: The Significance of a Political Distinction. Since Bobbio is a serious political philosopher the book starts slowly with many distinctions that may seem academic. Start on p. 38 for the good stuff. An excellent book by a careful thinker.

Sorry for the late hit; I sort of lost track of this blog last fall, when you started going a long time between posts.
I'm reading an interesting book Ethical Realism by Anatol Lieven and John Hulsman, 2006.
Don't be put off by their overly high opinion of Truman. Their point seems to be that things would have been much worse if we had taken the path of Burnham or Patton: warts and all, containment as it was practised was still better than war.
As we can now see all too well.
They argue for a return to the realistic and admittedly morally ambiguous point of view of, primarily, Niebuhr as filtered through Kennan.
